Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park offers two active volcanoes, Kīlauea and Mauna Loa. The park is found on the island of Hawai'i, the largest of the Hawaiian Islands. Visitors are able to get close to active lava flow (but not too close of course). What makes this park fascinating is that, because of the volcanoes' subdued yet constant activity of emitting lava, the island itself is actually growing. Visitors to the island can watch slow rivers of lava as they flow from the volcano all the way down to the ocean. When the lava hits the water and eventually cools and hardens, the island gets a little bigger. ADG eternalized a volcanic surge from “Puʻu ʻŌʻō,” one of the active vents on the Kīlauea volcano. To learn more about the volcanoes, visit the Friends of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.
