The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center is partially housed in a historic 1898 building, which was originally constructed as a Federal Post Office and Custom House to handle the large volume of foreign mail that was needed at the time thanks to the city’s prominent, international trade in tobacco. The building also housed the Clarksville Department of Electricity from 1939 to 1979 before becoming a museum.
