Inuit tribes that used to live in what is now Katmai National Park continue to tell stories of a creature, fantastic tales of a mighty avian beast that lived in the most remote regions of Alaska. Appearing as a giant bird capable of shooting lightning from its eyes and causing thunderclaps with its wings, the Thunderbird was revered and feared by Indigenous Alaskan peoples. The legends say it could control the weather, bring rain and storms, and was so huge it could carry a full-grown whale in its talons. According to the oral histories of Indigenous Inuit peoples, the Thunderbird has not been seen in generations. Many believe it left its home in the remote regions of Alaska and went to live in the clouds above the Alaskan tundra.
