On October 14, 2023, an annular solar eclipse will cross North, Central, and South America. Visible in parts of the United States, Mexico, and many countries in South and Central America, millions of people in the Western Hemisphere can experience this eclipse. In the U.S., the annular solar eclipse begins in Oregon at 9:13 a.m. PDT and ends in Texas at 12:03 p.m. CDT. Annularity, where the Sun forms a ‘ring of fire’ around the Moon, is visible along a narrow path that crosses the US from Oregon to Texas. It then passes over Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula, plus parts of Central America, Colombia, and Brazil. Elsewhere in the Americas—from Alaska to Argentina—a partial eclipse will be visible. The math used to make eclipse maps was worked out by Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel and William Chauvenet in the 19th century, long before computers and the precise astronomical data we have access to today. The artists of Anderson Design Group have created this vintage-looking, delightfully nerdy Eclipse Map. Enjoy it as a poster, canvas, or a metal sign.
