Cross Cave (in Slovene: "Križna jama,” also named “Cold Cave under Cross Mountain” which would be “Mrzla jama pod Križno goro”), is a beautiful cave formation in Slovenia's Lož Valley. Named after the nearby Holy Cross Church in Podlož, the cave is particularly well known among Karst caves for its chain of over 45 subterranean lakes of stunning emerald green water. Extremely slow-growing calcareous formations and their dangerous fragility are the main obstacle to large-scale tourism in the cave, limiting daily tourist visits to the flooded part of the cave to just four people at a time. One of the benefits to keeping tourism to a minimum is that Cross Cave is among the best-preserved caves that is still open to the public. Keeping tourism to a limited number allows the cave to remain largely untouched or disturbed by human hands. And with 45 species of organisms, some not discovered until 2000, Cross Cave is the fourth-largest cave ecosystem in the world in terms of biodiversity. The cave was first documented in 1832, but the part of the cave that includes lakes and stream passages wasn’t explored by Slovene cavers until 1926. Further, many sections of the cave remain unexplored! To celebrate such a unique and mysterious aspect of nature, Anderson Design Group rendered an original design in the tradition of the Golden Age of Poster Art. This retro-styled rendering and vintage poster art will look great as an art print, notecard, postcard, metal sign, canvas, or mini canvas. Or gift the piece to someone who loves vintage travel art!
