The Bahamas: Hope Town (Abaco Islands) By Derek Anderson, Joel Anderson, 2024

Hope Town is one of the districts of The Bahamas, on the Abaco islands. Golf carts are the district's main mode of transportation, while most of the supplies for the area are brought in by barge each week. Elbow Cay proudly boasts a shining beacon of its historical past in the last active kerosene burning and manned by keeper light station in The Bahamas with historical 8 outbuildings (circa 1863) and an original working light tower. The Elbow Reef Lighthouse remains the only active and manned light station in the world that has not been electrified; the lens is hand-wound by a keeper and fueled by kerosene. While other similar lighthouses have all been automated, Elbow Reef still operates much as it has for over a century and a half. A lighthouse keeper must climb 101 steps to the top of the tower and light the kerosene-fueled burner by hand. He then hand-cranks a weight system that slowly drops to keep the lantern turning, much like an old grandfather clock. Kerosene feeds the flame in the old burner, and a massive Fresnel—pronounced ‘freh-NELL’—lens system projects a powerful beam of light visible up to 23 nautical miles away, helping sea vessels avoid the shallow waters and the vibrant coral reef off Elbow Cay. Rendered by the talented artists of Anderson Design Group, this tropical illustration will look great as a framed print, metal sign, canvas, or as a set of notecards or postcards.
