Remembering the Good Times at the Lake with Vintage Poster Art
“A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth's eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.”
-Henry David Thoreau
Henry David Thoreau put it best. There is an untold magic in our inland lakes. These are the objects of inspiration for artists like us. Being that we ourselves are big fans of a trip to the lake, our team at Anderson Design Group was inspired to create the Lake and Lodge Collection, a series of 36 handcrafted illustrations that feature cabins, lake houses, fishing, swimming, camping, boating, some of our nation’s most famous lakes, and more.
If you love summer nights spent in the woods or along the lakeshore, if you look forward to roasted marshmallows and fresh-caught trout, refreshing dips in alpine lakes and long road trips pulling the camper and packing the tents, then this collection is the one for you.
What Do We Get Out of “Getting Away?”
There is a reason why they call it “Lake Therapy.” Every time we take a break from the day-to-day grind and get away to the lake house or lodge, we recharge our batteries and breathe fresh air once again. Whether you enjoy fly fishing, a peaceful canoe ride across a placid lake, a plunge off the dock into a translucent pond, a nap in a hammock among whispering pines, a sail across the open water on a breezy day, or a family story around the campfire, these moments seem all the better when they are made at your favorite lake.
In the sometimes overwhelming hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we really do get a lot out of simply getting away. It’s a form of therapy, in and of itself. It’s easy to neglect this much needed time away from the cities; this much needed time simply being immersed in nature. But we can’t ignore just how much better we feel when we do take the time to step out of the house, turn off the cell phones, leave the emails unread, and escape to the family (or rental) cabin.
A Few of Our Nation’s Most Mesmerizing Lakes
Our country is famous for its lakes. And that's something to be grateful for. The U.S. is home to tens of thousands of inland lakes, beautiful pools that sparkle in the sun and invite us to enjoy them. And on the shores of many of these picturesque bodies of water you will find lake houses, cabins, lodges, fishing huts, and family vacation homes.
Lake Superior is the largest lake in the U.S., a giant lake that is more expansive in surface area than the entire state of South Carolina! Lake Superior borders Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Canada.
Some lakes, like Lake Conroe in Texas, are distinctive for their almost year-round appeal. These warmer-climate lakes give families a chance to enjoy a day in the sun, cruising along a freshwater lake, even during a time of year when most lakes are more than a little frigid!
Other lakes are known for their beauty, and for that, Lake Tahoe is at least in the top ten. Lake Tahoe is perhaps one of the most famous lakes in the U.S., a well-known vacation destination in Northeast California. About three million people visit this charming lake each year.
Crater Lake is a unique and exciting lake. At 6,178 feet above sea level, this Oregon lake resides within the caldera of a mighty, dormant volcano. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States, measuring in at 1,949 feet deep.
No matter which lake you are drawn to, each one holds potential family memories to be made, magical moments just waiting to happen.
Remembering Our Cherished Moments Through Art
When we spend a peaceful evening around a campfire with our family members, the memory of that night stays with us for a lifetime: the loons out on the water calling out their sad song; the frogs chirruping in the reeds nearby; the wind in the trees above; the smell of the campfire; the taste of roasted marshmallows, hot chocolate, and food cooked over the fire; the way the shadows dance just beyond the firelight, barely decipherable in the growing night.
It’s memories like these that are meant to last. And when we decorate our homes with artwork that reminds us of those moments, it helps us keep those moments in the forefront of our memories, even after those summer nights at the lake and lodge have long since passed. That’s why art is so important. Handcrafted artwork like our vintage travel posters reminds us of something great, something treasured. The Lake and Lodge posters are perfect for remembering those splendid moments spent camping, road-tripping, fishing, swimming, or visiting the family cabin or lake house.
As for us, every time we look at the Lake and Lodge collection, it puts us back in those family moments, and we get that warm, fuzzy feeling all over again. It truly is amazing what art can do. We hope it does the same for you.
Eternalizing Life's Greatest Moments with Vintage Illustrations
If you liked what you saw in the Lake and Lodge Collection, Anderson Design Group has more than 1,700 hand-drawn, lettered, and painted vintage illustrations. In 2007, we embarked on a journey to create original, hand-rendered artwork of all the places in the U.S. and the world that meant something special to us, to our family members, to our friends, and to you.
We canvased (pun intended!) the American National Parks, creating travel art of each National Park. We found unique attractions and points of interest in every U.S. state and many cities, and we created artwork of those attractions. We broadened our focus to the world, seeking to craft an illustration for every country on our beautiful planet. And we never forgot our roots along the way, creating as we did a collection dedicated to our beloved home of Nashville, Tennessee. Take a walk through our collections and get lost in the nostalgia and romance of vintage travel poster art.
Hope to see you out on the lake,
